Ukraine fears suspension of Russian gas supplies, calls for speedy opening of Slovak corridor – energy ministry Kyiv, March 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Ukraine fears the suspension of Russian gas supplies and calls on the European Commission to facilitate the speedy realization of the possibility of gas supply in the country from Slovakia. This information is contained in a letter of Ukrainian Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Yuriy Prodan to EU Energy Commissioner Gunther Oettinger dated March 24 and posted on the ministrys Web site. The main instrument, which can overcome this threat, is the organization of natural gas supplies from the European Union, in particular from Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia to Ukraine... Such deliveries in accordance with the EU rules are provided through access to the gas transportation network of the EU countries on a non-discriminatory and, importantly, transparent basis, reads the letter. The minister notes that Russia has already announced its intention from April 1 not to apply the reducing coefficient and the $100 discount under the Kharkiv agreements to the price of Russian natural gas under the contract between Naftogaz Ukrainy and Gazprom. We should mention that the remaining time is not enough for organizing natural gas deliveries from the EU to Ukraine. If we fail to quickly solve this problem, we can predict the recurrence of the gas war that took place in 2009 under the same scenario and with similar consequences, including even the complete cessation of gas supplies from the Russian Federation in the western direction, reads the document. In this regard, Prodan offers taking more urgent measures than those agreed with Oettinger on March 19. I propose that in the next two or three days a task force of quite a high level should be created to prevent the crisis and, if necessary, for appropriate response. The main task of the group should be to ensure the speedy organization of physical deliveries of natural gas through the territory of Slovakia to Ukraine, said the minister.
