Ukraine has no plans to impose state of emergency Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara says Kiev currently has no plans to impose a state of emergency despite the ongoing anti-government protests in the Eastern European country. Kozhara told reporters on Monday that declaring a state of emergency is not on the agenda of the Ukrainian government for the moment. Today we are not considering the introduction of a state of emergency. Today, this measure is not on the table,” he said. The Ukrainian top diplomat also expressed hope that lawmakers would adopt legislative solutions to ease rising tensions in the former Soviet Republic. Ukrainian Justice Minister Olena Lukash had earlier threatened that she could call for a state of emergency, after anti-government protesters occupied the Justice Ministry in the capital and stormed several government buildings throughout country. President Victor Yanukovich has established talks with opposition leaders in a bid to halt the countrys crisis. The opposition says it will continue with the discussions. Ukraine has been rocked by anti-government protests since Yanukovych refrained from signing the Association Agreement with the European Union (EU) at the third Eastern Partnership Summit in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, on November 29, 2013 in favor of closer ties with Russia. Kiev and Moscow reached a strategic economic and trade deal last December, which provides Ukraine with significant discounts on imported Russian gas and billions of dollars in credit.
