FROM THE WAR OF EMPIRES TO THE DIALOGUE OF CULTURES (Lviv, Ukraine) Dear colleagues, Ukrainian National Committee of ICOM NGO Agency of Cultural Strategies NGO Association of Museums and Galleries Museum of Ethnography and Applied Arts of Institute of Ethnology of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine with the support of ICOM Europe are honored to invite you to participate in an international conference 1914-2014. FROM THE WAR OF EMPIRES TO THE DIALOGUE OF CULTURES (Heritage: interpretation, conservation, shared responsibility) What is national cultural heritage? Who is the owner of cultural heritage? What does it mean – to be its successor? Could it be our or alien? How to use it? Who should undertake the responsibility? Hundred years have passed since the beginning of the First World War in 2014. A number of new independent countries appeared on the political map of Europe after the end of the First World War and the collapse of empires. The consequences of ethno-political reallocation of the continent affected the history of Central and Eastern Europe of the XX century till the collapse of the USSR and the military conflicts in 1990-2000s. Today, more than a hundred years later, an important factor of the formation of national states is rethinking of the historical and cultural heritage. However, moving boundaries and changing identities led to a number of disputes and disagreements both among experts from different countries and at the level of political decisions. Possible way to solve this problem is to start a constructive dialogue between the neighboring countries on the basis of shared responsibility for the preservation of cultural heritage regardless of their ethnicity. In 2005, ICOM National Committees of Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Germany and ICOM Europe initiated a discussion on the interpretation and usage of cultural heritage of border areas within the framework of the workshop for museum professionals Moving Boundaries – Change of Identity (Vilnius-Minsk-Kyiv). Lviv Conference 2014 is aimed to continue this discussion. Place and date of the Conference: Lviv (Ukraine), November 14-15, 2014 Duration: 2 days Themes for discussion: - 1914-2014: the processes of formation of nations and state, and appropriation of cultural heritage as an instrument of creating cultural and national identity – examples and trend analysis; - Change of national identity and the problem of interpretation and usage of common cultural heritage; - Theory, methods and practice of building of modern models of interpretation and usage of common cultural heritage; - The role of museums in shaping civic and social consciousness in terms of transforming of concepts of national culture and national heritage, and their dependence on the political situation; - The policy of indigenization in the USSR: 1920 and post-Soviet syndrome – the phenomenon of reproduction of historical and political attitudes; - Interpretation of cultural heritage: our / alien or common?; - Ways of combining efforts (inter-museum, interdisciplinary, international cooperation) for the conservation of cultural heritage as universal values: current practices and challenges.
