Ukwute Ndi Igbo Again Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has laid the foundation stone for the first phase of the Civil Servants’ Housing Estate of 1000 units at Isiagu, Awka South Local Government Area. Obi, while performing the function, said workers had the right to decent living, which he said is founded on good housing scheme and that the initiative was to alleviate the accommodation burden of workers. The project is a collaboration between the state government, Federal Mortgage Bank and the developer under the National Housing Scheme. It would be recalled that Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who attended Obi’s score card ceremony in Awka on Saturday, had said that Anambra ranked among the highest contributors to the fund. Obi explained that provision of conducive accommodation would encourage workers to put in their best to boost productivity. According to him, the project would provide direct and indirect employment, as well as fast tract infrastructural development of the area. He disclosed that the access road to the area had been awarded for reconstruction, while the on-going bridge project wiould be completed within one month. The State Head of Service, Chidi Ezeoke, thanked the governor for actualising the project and giving workers’ sense of belonging. He explained that 1,000 hectares of land had been acquired for the project and charged workers to work harder to reciprocate the gesture. Commissioner for Housing, Patrick Obi, thanked the governor for fulfilling his promise to workers. The State Controller of the Federal Mortgage Bank, Cosmas Nwankwo, commended the courage and bold steps of Obi to provide affordable houses for workers, assuring that the project would be completed as planned. Also speaking, the developer, Obi Ene, said the scheme was a continuous process to accommodate all qualified civil servants. Ene disclosed that the beneficiaries would be given mortgage to purchase the houses at six percent interest on loan and long period of repayment. Meanwhile, Obi has bagged triple grand honours from the Radio, Television Theatre Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) of Nigeria, Anambra State chapter. The awards presented to him in Awka include ‘Lion of Democracy’, ‘Man of the Decade’ and ‘Life Patron’ of the union. National President of the union, Yemisi Bamgbose, said no Nigerian had been so honoured, as the union had not presented any award to anybody in the last 10 years, explaining that the union had been monitoring and celebrating the governor’s numerous achievements and decided to crown his successful tenure with the honours. State chairman of RATTAWU, Emeka Kalu, in his address, said the honours were to celebrate the numerous achievements and dogged efforts in repositioning the state to become the really light of the nation. Responding, Obi, while thanked the union for the award, assured that he would strive to live up to the honour, noting that one of the lasting achievements of his administration was saving the state from total collapse. He said RATTAWU as a union had a duty to hold those in authority accountable to the people by questioning their shortcomings.
