Ultimately the challenge we face is to revitalise or revive the town of Bournemouth (or, more widely, the Poole, Christchurch, Bournemouth conurbation). The local arts scene is absolutely central to this endeavour – artists are visionaries, and what we need for our town and region is a vision. So here is the ‘political’ question: What could the arts scene in Bournemouth look like if it was developed in the future with the complete support of the local council? We have to transition our town. Presently it is a ‘patched up’ 19th-20th century tourist resort. It is still ‘living’ on the recreational appeal of a by-gone age. We make Bournemouth into a truly modern tourist venue, a cultural hub, a digital media emporium, a centre of musical and artistic excellence, a place where people come to ‘experience’, to relax, to recreate. We have to design for ourselves a new economic model. To prosper as a town, we have to make money as a town. The question is: how do we do this? We have to play to our strengths: we are EXCELLENT people. We need only to be empowered to express our excellence. Bournemouth Independent Alliance (BIA) offers us the opportunity to actually pull off something GREAT. Let’s take control of this town. We are artists, scientists, technicians, engineers, modellers, managers, communicators, marketers, caterers, traders, trades people and so on and so on. We undoubtedly have the ability to: 1. Design a great plan for the future of our town 2. Gain enough support for this plan to take over the town council Once we have done this, we begin to implement our plan. If you are anything like me, you have spent most of your life fighting against a failing economy. It’s now time to have some fun. In a sense what we are doing is playing a game. We all know that working together we can win this game – which means WE ALL WIN: a prosperous, joyful community – and a destination for restoration and invigoration.
