Um... No. The asshat who wrote this op-ed is creating a false binary. A pox on both your houses, I say. Yes, by all means, lets be critical of authenticity-seeking backpackers who idealize a pre-Communist playground with brown-tinted glasses, at the cost of actual Cubans quality of life. But since when has the rampant presence of corporate chains -- and other symptoms of American-style neoliberal market forces -- represented anything other than more consumer options? There are so many different (and, I personally think, better) models for prosperity, from Iceland to Uruguay. Its sheer arrogance to suggest that the Starbucks-and-strip-malls approach to development is the ideal. Besides, nothing in this article convinces me that actual Cubans are clamoring for Walmarts and fast food, to begin with.
