Unaccompanied Migrant Children – What You Should Know… VIOLENCE: We have heard that one of the main reasons children leave their homes and risk their lives to make the journey North to the U.S. is that they are fleeing violence. Here is what that violence looks like. Many children living in the impoverished community of La Chacra, El Salvador have to cross over gang boundaries 5 times just to go to school. In La Chacra and throughout Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, violence means living in heart pounding fear virtually all day because: • your son refused to join the gang at age 6 • you filed a police report about your daughter’s rape by gang members • you moved, out of fear of reprisal, into a different gang’s territory As a result, you and your extended family are all targets for murder. Since murdering a person is a requirement for joining a gang, there is no shortage of people who will kill. Call the police? Good luck! They may or may not show up. So you take your child out of school and never leave your house - or you run. This is not living. At best it is surviving under horrifying conditions. IHM is planning a short briefing on this issue in the Guadalupe Room, in church, after each Mass on October 4 & 5, 2014. We hope you will make time to attend.
