Unbelievable that this is happening in Hawaii nei in the 21st century. This is flatly illegal even under the State Constitution: Article IX, Section 9. The State shall have the power to preserve and develop the cultural, creative and traditional arts of its various ethnic groups. Article X, Section 4. Section 4. The State shall promote the study of Hawaiian culture, history and language. The State shall provide for a Hawaiian education program consisting of language, culture and history in the public schools. The use of community expertise shall be encouraged as a suitable and essential means in furtherance of the Hawaiian education program. Kini Kaawa with Maile Lee and 19 others My keiki came home from school today saying that the staff at Ehunuikaimalino explained today that the school is canceling all cultural activities claiming that culture is religion and religion cant be done in school. No written information was sent home by the school thus far on this matter. Cant sing a song like Hawaii Ponoi? All based on a few uneducated and ignorant perspectives. Most importantly why did the Pookumu only consider the manao from a very few rather than call a meeting to consider manao from ALL. From my understanding these few people as well as the leaders of the school are non-Hawaiian language speakers themselves. Why did the Pookumu not make a simple phone call and seek the advise from someone like the Director of the Hawaiian Language College? Before any non-speaker makes any serious decisions resulting in the end of a 27+ year long tradition of reconnecting and stabilizing Hawaiian identity of our youth, consult the experts!!
