Uncle Raymond Raymond Clark was my grandmother Grace Whitmans - TopicsExpress

Uncle Raymond Raymond Clark was my grandmother Grace Whitmans brother. His funeral is the first one that I remember, at the age of nine, in 1961. It was a sad, sad day. First time to see ladies all dressed in black. Some of them crying. First time to realize that someone I personally knew would never be seen again. Uncle Raymond was a bachelor and lived in a one room small house behind the home of Lester and Winnie Lou Lewis near the area that is now Meadowlakes. I peeked in there once and remember wondering how someone as tall as Uncle had room to turn around and get in bed. It was really just a place to sleep, I think. Two things stand out as I try to think of him through a childs eyes. He was a tall, gentle man with a friendly demeanor, and he was almost always covered in white dust. He worked at the Rock Crusher. Another scene sticks in my mind. Sitting on the front porch with Uncle Les and Uncle Raymond in the summer, passing time. Men are telling stories and huge scissor-tail fly catchers are cavorting around the house doing aerial gymnastics. Uncle Les tells me to be real careful around those birds, cause those tail feathers are real sharp.... Anyway, Uncle Raymond woke up one morning, I am sure just a regular old morning, put his foot in his boot, and was stung by a stingin lizard. Normally painful but no biggie - except Uncle went into anaphylactic shock and died.
