Under the line today is a question from the NY Times... but not its answer. I buy a lot of poetry for Bookends-- almost certainly more than is found in other used bookstores in this area. I read very little of it, and prefer to find the poetry in fiction (note a Steinbeck piece I presented recently). Part of the reason for my decision to omit any of the answers to the question Does Poetry Matter is in the fact that the Times does not seem to recognize modern music in the discussion While it may be a noticeable step from Shakespeare to rap, still I would maintain that it is a step of degree, not of kind. And I might point out that iambic pentameter, if set to music and a beat, would likely irritate parents as much as rap. Lennon and McCartney and Bob Dylan were the most successful in English poets of the twentieth century, not e e cummings or Sylvia Plath. ______________________________________________________ Does Poetry Matter? INTRODUCTION Poetry André da Loba “Poetry is the weak sister of its sibling arts,” writes David Orr in Sunday’s New York Times Book Review, which is dedicated to contemporary poetry. Orr argues that every tool – including celebrity writers – could be used in the effort to persuade us to appreciate the form. But can it be done? Can poetry ever regain its relevancy?
