Under the old covenant, the high priests offered animal blood sacrifices every year to atone for sin. However, sin was still a major issue. The judgment for the sins of all mankind could not be paid with merely animal blood sacrifices. The practice of sacrificing animals under the old covenant foreshadowed the ultimate sacrifice—the precious blood of Jesus Christ. His blood was the only way to truly deliver people from God’s judgment of sin and free their guilty conscience.
