Underdogism. Though not strictly an American trait, this - TopicsExpress

Underdogism. Though not strictly an American trait, this practice is rampant here. Americans love the underdog, the David and Goliath and such, usually with out any regard for the merits of the various combatants. It fits with the neo-classist ethos of rooting for the little guy, because in some way, most people identify as the little guy. Thus they attribute a moral superiority to this character. Its really stupid, and we all do it at some point, because we want things to be fair. I try and catch myself and look at things a bit broader. I wish people would like what they like instead of professing to like what makes them look like a better person. Of course, nobody admits this. They say, Yeah, I hate when people do that, but I am honest and never do that. while pretending they hate a popular song. This is where guilty pleasures come from. Please indulge a guilt pleasure today, enjoy the honesty.
