Understanding Love. Loving kindness means the cultivation of a heart that accepts without conditions and is all encompassing. It does not choose or select, but shares itself equally and with all beings. Friends and enemies alike become equal objects of this practice, as we live in peace more and more with beings exactly as they are. We will understand that all cruel, unkind and selfish acts come from a mind not in harmony with itself and still under the influence of desires and aversions; and that the person continually empowering these qualities of mind must meet their consequence, sooner or later. The potential for all human beings is a life established in love; a life where they will contribute something worthy to all their relationships and always be strong. The person manifesting loving kindness can never be the victim in any situation. One student asked me: “If I have only love in my heart, won’t others be able to take advantage of me?” I could only reply that: “If others take advantage of you, it’s because you don’t have love in your heart.” The first person we have to love is ourselves. The moment we truly love ourselves, how can we allow others to abuse us? Love will not permit that, for ourselves or others. From the loving heart comes the falling away of judgement and criticism. This does not mean that we are unable to act in the world, but only that we stop manipulating others into predetermined categories for our own emotional and psychological security. May all beings be happy.
