Understanding the Art of Slapping: In order to stay competitive, every team NEEDS slappers. If you haven’t already realized that slapping has changed the game of softball, just watch the Women’s College World Series in the upcoming month. Every great team has slappers in their line-up, and often in the 1st/2nd/9th spots to jump-start their offense. Slappers have advantages over other hitters because speed never slumps, they matchup well to overpowering pitchers, and they can utilize an array of offensive options to execute a quality at-bat depending on the defensive positioning, weaknesses, and strengths. Slappers can bunt-for-a-hit, soft slap, power slap, fake-bunt slap, chop slap, fake-bunt bunt, and for some, even stand in from the left side and swing away. With so many offensive options, elite slappers must also be smart players who think critically about the game and have the ability to see a corner playing back, soft dirt, a weak arm in the infield, or a tight defense. A slapper also must understand her role: to get on base and to move runners. Her most important statistic is not batting average, but on-base percentage. If a slapper advances a runner to scoring position or finds a way on base (either a hit, error, walk, etc.), she should consider her at-bat a success. Maggie At The Diamond, teaches not only the physical and fundamental aspects of slapping and the short game, but also the mental side, in hope of developing premier slappers who will dominate at the next level.
