Understanding the difference between what is Academically/Linguistically considered a "BELIEF" and what is considered to be "PHILOSOPHY" Belief is faith Philosophy is knowledge People often confuse the two: Belief is "Opinion" (often adopted via life experience and/or upbringing) Philosophy is methodology ("beyond" personal experience) philosophy is external and does not allow for opinion or belief In order for something to be a "philosophy" it must contain all 5 of the following ... comparison--examining similarities (red & green apples). contrast--examining differences (apples vs. oranges). analysis--taking things apart to examine them (apple parts). synthesis--fitting things together in new wholes (apple tree). addition--asking what would happen if something were added to a process (growing apple-oranges). deletion--asking what would happen if something were deleted from a process (growing apples with no crunch). It is important when debating to understand "what is philosophy" and what is "belief" ... IE a religious belief is the same thing as a "life philosophy" meaning neither are true philosophy --- similar to calling a motorcycle a car - both are methods of transportation but they are not equal (meaning they both have a function but not equal function) nor are they one and the same.
