Unfortunately, I lost a lot of my love for Indianapolis tonight. While I waited at the bus stop, a group of young, black men started to walk across the street my way. There were two police cars parked off to the side of the stop, and one proceeded to speed toward to the men as if to hit them. It screeched to a stop in front of the men who were visibly terrified, and the police officer inside yelled, Get out of the street, dumb a** n******! Everyone at the stop gasped, and the young men resumed life as if this was a normal occurrence as the police car sped off. Unfortunately, I did not get any information on the cops because it happened so quickly, and I was still picking my bottom lip off the ground. I was completely in shock. I lived in Los Angeles my whole life and spent time in NYC, and I must say this is the first time I have been a witness to outright racism. Its absolutely terrifying to see someone abusing their power in this way. In that moment, I thought of my brother and cousins. I cant imagine how it must feel to be profiled and harassed. I am so disappointed tonight.
