Unfortunately after a great weekend it was cut short early this morning with an unstoppable migraine that required me to leave the retreat early and head to a hospital for what I hoped was the usual Emergency care I have always received. Without naming the small town hospital I will say that over my 30 years with migraines I have had a consistent course of treatment and respect for my symptoms when I clearly present as being in extreme pain and outline every medication including injections I have to give myself. So after being made to wait for 1.5 hrs in the fluorescent lit waiting room with heavy smelling smokers, yelling over the jack hammering while tears streamed down my face they found me a bed. Shortly there after a nurse came in with an IV and stated she was going to be starting my line as per Drs orders which I thought very odd given I had not seen a Doctor yet! So with my questioning of which medication exactly this would be and how the Dr would know this based on his lack of assessing me, she said its standard procedure, we start everyone on IV fluids. I said, except an IV is an unnecessary procedure which in 30 years of chronic migraines I have never required one. She retorted that in 25 years she has never not done one!! Lol!! She essentially told me the Dr had gone on his lunch and told them to give me fluids, then when he came back he would give me pain meds if I still required it. I attempted to explain that I was not dehydrated, I have attended the emergency with standing orders for Tarodol with gravol for years but I was not in my own city at present and needed to get home. She said that it was the IV or I leave, so I made the choice to suck it up and drive home. Made it safely back and clearly will never visit there again, feeling very thankful for the excellent care I have always received everywhere else over the years. All in all the weekend was still amazing, and I wont let this bring down all the good that happened!
