Unfortunately our NT-AS relationships can be very stressful at times. I know Im not alone in feelings of isolation, frustration and sadness. This can greatly affect our own mental health if not managed. There are so many things we have no control over so its very important to actively manage the things we can. Our self care is vital during these times of high stress and only we can give ourselves that gift. How do I care for myself? Consider these things Physical—Care for your body by trying to include some exercise most days. A walk, yoga, boxacise, choose something that you enjoy to make it easier. Focus on eating healthy and make it easier by keeping healthy snacks around. Fruit, rice crackers, something you dont have to prepare and clean up after. This also includes pampering. Baths, massages, foot rubs, whatever works for you and you have time for. Put the kids to bed and run a bath with some candles, you dont need someone else to create romantic, relaxing atmospheres for yourself Spiritual—This is personal for all of us and doesnt need to mean aligning to a faith. This is just about connecting through prayer or meditation. Having quiet moments to settle your mind and feel connected to the wider world around you. Music is a great one on this category as well. Load music dancing around the room on your own like a fool, its a truly spiritual experience :) or is that just me lol Emotional—Our feelings are a way for our mind and body to connect. Dont try and suppress them but allow yourself to feel them in a safe and therapeutic way. Its ok to cry, in fact its very healthy to. Know when its feeling too much and ask for help. If you cant find it, keep looking! Art can be a great way to get out feelings in a safe way, writing, painting, craft, baking...whatever works for you. Relational—Have a friend. You really only need one and any extras are just icing on the cake. You dont have to share you AS issues with them but have someone to catch up with, keep you connected to the outside world and laugh with. If you dont have one, FIND ONE! Intellectual—Keep your mind busy and active. Read, study, learn a craft. Boredom can be dangerous and leave us trapped with thoughts that often get out of hand. Dont add to your stress with extra chores but try and challenge your mind in some way. It loves it :) Let me know what Ive forgotten :)
