Unfortunately, there are some individuals (here in the UK) who have opted to entirely ignore professional industry recommendations, and indeed the existence of the reflexology core curriculum. Instead these individuals continue to offer to potential reflexology trainees the option of short, weekend, or distance learning courses – whilst readily assuring the uninitiated the course is of ‘practitioner level’. There are also ‘official bodies’ – some beauty industry based, and some entirely independent and self-governing (often correspondence type organisations) providing courses with ‘accreditation’ approval... Reflexology is a wonderfully complex, multi-dimensional complementary modality – and the impact of the reflexology package can be powerful, and often transformative for clients. Our practitioners are increasingly engaging in good quality research, and we are beginning to fully grasp the multi-layered complexities of the reflexology package. A good reflexologist works with people – not just feet. Reflexology is about touch, pressure, appropriate knowledge, spoken and unspoken communications, philosophy, intuition, intimate human interaction, support, care, and sometimes even guidance. Reflexology is so very much more than a relaxing foot massage.
