Unfortunately we start our year off on a slightly bad note. On the night of December 29, 2014 someone decided that they needed to steal our mailbox. This wasnt your every day average mailbox either. This is a 30 gallon French Oak barrel with a large steel mailbox fit inside of it. We are celebrating our 39th year in business and I can say that that mailbox has been there for at least 35 of them. About 4 years ago I had the barrel completely restored to its original glory complete with a brand new barrel, steel mailbox painted gloss black and the original flag refinished as well. The wood was stained and varnished and the bands of the barrel were painted red and black. It is quite large and weighs about 70 pounds. We did report the mailbox stolen to the Chautauqua County Sheriffs office but havent heard much as of yet. So I am reaching out to our Facebook friends and family for help. We dont have a recent picture of the mailbox but know that hundreds of our Merritt Customer Friends and Family have stopped and taken pictures of the entrance to our winery. So we are asking that anyone who may have a relative new picture (within the last 4 years) please send it to us at Nywines@merrittestatewinery . We are also asking that anyone with any information about the mailbox please come forward with it. This is a family heirloom as well as a truly unique piece. If anyone has seen it recently please let us know. It is truly sad that integrity is in such short supply. Please share this with all of your friends.
