Union Government announces India’s cyber security policy The Union Government today had released India’s national cyber security policy for the year 2013, as a protection towards growing cyber crimes & growing privacy concerns in the country. The new policy aims to provide confidence and reasonable assurance to all stakeholders in the country and the global community about the safety, security and resilience of cyberspace. While discussing the policy today, Kapil Sibal, laid emphasis that services offered on the cyberspace needs to be secured and protected. He also pointed that the businesses should realize the need to safeguard cyberspace before they engage in ecommerce activities. Looking at all these challenges government had even assured to help SMBs mitigate their security concerns and encourage them to protect data. “Cyber security policy would safeguard individuals and corporate data,” said Milind Deora, Minister of State for Communications and IT. National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) will be the nodal agency to coordinate all the cyber security matters, and with NSCS, the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) will also be mandating the security practices related to the design, acquisition, development, use and operation of information resources. NCIIPC will operate 24×7 to enhance the protection and will be managing crisis through effective predictive, preventive, protective, response and recovery actions. There were also reports that government may invest as much as USD 1 billion in next three years under India’s first cyber security policy to invite private security firms from both indigenous and international companies. If this happens, it will be first time the government had invited private players for guarding cyber ecosystem in India, so far it was based on ad-hoc basis. It is believed that the lack of clarity had kept private firms away from entering into this sector. “All over the world, private players are actively engaged in the information security business, which has already become a multi-billion dollar industry,” said a senior government official. The government also plans to set up a centre of excellence where various studies in the realm of cryptology, cryptography, forensic and trusted systems could be undertaken. Cybercrime is surely a big issue for individuals as well as government since according Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) more than 1,000 govt websites were hacked in past 3 years, because of which various ministries and departments have faced security issues. Government has been working on introducing various mechanisms to address these issues and this policy is supposed to be in line of that.
