Union Power: In the Summer of 1941 before The United States was pulled into the raging world war, The American Federation of Musicians (The Musicians Union) via their president James Petrillo, started a strike against the BIG 6 recording labels in America. The musicians knew that they were owed royalties and disallowed any musicians to record (there as no tape yet, so it was disks) for any public listening until the music business agreed to pay royalties. Musicians could still play for a live (radio) broadcast played only once. They could also play live for dancers. So when it came time to make and sell records, very little could be done. - FRANK SINATRAs record company decided to bring in large groups of professional singers to create an orchestra sound with their voices. The effect came out nicely. The unintended consequences is that it broke America of its addiction to Big Band music. Singers reigned supreme when the strike ended in 1944. Ill link to the article and to more examples in the comments below. - The union got everyone paid, by the way. https://youtube/watch?v=rDbbtMXoRtQ
