Union Station 1945 and today. Grand opening was October 30, 1914 and was the 3rd largest in the country. It was built to last 200 years. Travelers would find a barbershop, post office, drug store, coffee shop, and elegant restaurant. Businessmen often met under its clock. Interestingly, it also had a small jail and emergency hospital and its own heating and cooling plant located just west of the building. As early as the 50s, train travel started to decline and maintenance started to suffer. In 1972, it was placed on The National Register of Historic places and ideas were put forth as to what to do with the building. Interesting history!
