For the first time, California has adopted a statewide policy to protect the states precious groundwater resources for future generations. On Tuesday, Governor Jerry Brown signed a group of groundwater bills into law that will bring Californias water system out of the Wild West and into the 21st century. This milestone is thanks in large part to you—the scientists, experts, and UCS supporters who called on state legislators to take action this year. Thank you for raising your voice in support of science-based groundwater policies. Until this week, California was the only state in the West without comprehensive, statewide oversight of groundwater use. With dwindling surface water and limited regulation, groundwater pumping has intensified at an alarming rate in the current drought. This is an even more concerning trend as climate change is expected to increase the frequency and severity of droughts in the West.
