United Nations Secretary- General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, yesterday - TopicsExpress

United Nations Secretary- General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, yesterday called on Boko Haram and all extremist groups in Nigeria to cease their attacks in the Northern parts of the country. This fresh warning came barely 24 hours after several innocent people including worshipers were killed while praying inside a mosque in the Mafa and Kondugo areas of Borno State. According to a statement made available to United Nations correspondents last night, the Secretary-General strongly condemned the recent violent attacks that have killed scores of civilians in the localities of Mafa and Kondugo in Borno state. The statement made available by Mr. Ban Ki-moon’s spokesman in New York quoted the United Nations chief as saying that all parties in the affected areas shouls resolve their differences through dialogue and other peaceful means rather than the killings of innocent people. Mr. Ban Ki-moon however reiterated his firm conviction that no objective could be attained through such violence. Just two weeks ago, the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court reported that there was reason to believe that Boko Haram had been committing crimes against humanity in Nigeria by bombing, killing and maiming innocent people in the country. The report issued by the Office of the Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda then, found that the group has, since July 2009, “launched a widespread and systematic attack that has resulted in the killing of more than 1,200 Christian and Muslims civilians in different locations throughout Nigeria. The ICC further said that it was assessing whether the national authorities in Nigeria were conducting genuine proceedings in relation to those who appeared to bear the greatest responsibility for such crimes, and its gravity.
