United States Arizona—A Diagnostic Test for EMS/AHPNS Linda Nunan, an assistant staff scientist at Dr. Donald Lightner’s shrimp pathology laboratory at The University of Arizona, posted the following information to The Shrimp List, a mailing list for shrimp farmers. We have been working very hard on getting a reliable diagnostic test for EMS/AHPNS to market, but unfortunately we are working with Vibrio parahaemolyticus, which is very common in the marine environment, so first we have to figure out what genetic element is different in this Vibrio. I have an experimental PCR test that detects the strain in both Asia and Mexico broth cultures, but I am still in the process of validating it, and I do not feel comfortable releasing a protocol that may cross react with non-EMS causing Vibrios. Believe me, I wish this disease had been caused by a somewhat more unique species of bacteria, which would have made developing a diagnostic test much easier. My primary concern is to develop a validated, reliable test so we can screen broodstock, PLs and imports and exports for the disease. This will help stop the spread of the disease. Shrimp farmers are in a much better position than we are to determine which pond treatments work best. Our facility for running exclusively EMS challenge tests should be completed soon.
