United Way of the Capital Region, Highmark Blue Shield, The Foundation for Enhancing Communities and Family Health Council – along with a long list of generous community partners – are sponsoring a health fair exclusively for uninsured African American men, ages 18-64. The event will be held on September 27th at the Zembo Mosque with two sessions – one from 8:30 a.m. to Noon and one from 12:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. We will be providing a complete menu of free health screenings for the men at the site with a goal of serving 200 men. The tests include: Sickle Cell Trait Testing Cholesterol Checks Blood Pressure Checks HIV Tests STD Testing Vision Screenings Diabetes Screenings (A1C Test) Prostate Cancer Screenings (Blood Test and Digital Rectal Exam) In addition, we have made arrangements with area health providers to provide follow up care to any man who exhibits a positive test result, with follow up appointments scheduled that day, on –site. Dr. Arthur Williams from Hamilton Health will provide a “men’s health tune-up” presentation and address a number of medical issues that African American men face. Channels will provide a demonstration on how to prepare some typical African American foods in a healthier fashion and Central PA Food Bank will provide a bag of food the men can take home to prepare the dish at home as well (recipes will also be included). Recognizing that some of the attendees may not have access to a full kitchen or microwave, the recipes provided will be able to be prepared on a hotplate appliance. As an added incentive, there will be a variety of door prizes and a flat screen TV will be raffled off at each of the two sessions. To be eligible to win the TV , men must complete at least 3 of the health screenings provided. Attached is a flyer which I ask you to distribute to individuals, employers, or other groups who may benefit from this screenings or who have access this target population and encourage them to attend. This a first-time-ever event and we hope you help us to promote it. Thanks for your assistance! Susan D.
