United picked the winning design for a 32-storey future headquarters United is set to join the industry-wide trend of constructing multistory headquarter buildings, picking out an innovative design for the headquarters it plans to construct on a 3,338 sqm plot it has received from the Addis Ababa City Administration around Senga Tera area. The winner of the design competition, which had two stages, was announced on Monday, November 5, 2012 in a ceremony held at the Hilton hotel, dignified by the presence of Ato Mekuria Haile, Minister, Urban Development and Construction Ministry, honorable guests and members of the business community. The winning design came from Esiknder Wubetu and partners consultant. The designs from K2N Architects and Engineers Consulting and Gereta consult architects, placed second and third, respectively, out of seven entrants that had passed on to the second stage of the competition. Speaking on the occasion, Ato Birhanu Getaneh, president of the Bank, said United floated an open bid for the architectural competition that attracted a total of 72 companies, which took the bid document to participate in the competition initially. However, the companies that submitted the technical drawings were 41 in number, one of the highest to compete in an architectural design contest, of which seven were selected by the jury that is made up of highly prominent and qualified professionals on the field in the country. The building which will be 32-storeys tall will be one of the city’s iconic figures upon completion, it was noted. It was further said the building will play a significant role in boosting the goodwill of the bank, as well as serve in generating an additional income for the bank. It was also remarked the building, which will incorporate state of the art technology, will indeed pass the test of time and be a source of pride as well as a great asset to shareholders of the bank. During the event all the seven entrants that had passed to the second stage of the competition received certificates of recognition. The top three winners, picked by the jury, on the other hand, were handed out trophies by the guest of honor, Ato Mekuria Haile. The overall cost of the project is anticipated to consume 800 million birr and is expected to be completed in five years time.
