Units from the Spokane Valley Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire at the intersection of N. Barker Rd and E Buckeye Ave at 1:58 a.m. today. Responding SVFD units observed flames and a smoke column from over a mile away. The first fire engine arrived at a single story residence located in the 19800 block of E Buckeye Ave approximately 6 minutes after the 911 call with heavy smoke and flames showing through the roof and front portion of the residence. With two adjacent structures as potential exposures, Spokane County Sheriff officers evacuated one neighboring residence. First arriving SVFD resources considered the residence to be occupied and took immediate actions to contain the fire to area of involvement and initiate a rapid search. Firefighters used a technique known as vent, enter and search to gain immediate access to the bedrooms in an attempt to locate potential occupants, while containing the fire to the front half of the structure. No occupants were located and neighbors were able to verify the location of the occupants and communicated that they were in a safe location. The main body of fire was knocked down within 15 minutes of the fire department’s arrival. Firefighters were able to save a portion of the structure, however the residence will likely be considered a total loss.
