Unity Then Jesus prayed that we believers might be one in the same manner and to the same degree that He and the Father are one. That means one in substance, one in purpose, and one in spirit. God intends the church and the home to both reflect that truth. Though Heavenly Father, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit do different things, they think like one, act like one, and respond as one. And they are the perfect portrait of the way the body of Christ is to function. Yes, we have our differences. Yes, we may even see peripheral doctrines differently. But Paul reminded us there is only one God, one faith, and one baptism. John thus told us that the way the unbelieving world would know that we are Christs disciples would be by the love, the unity, the oneness we had one with the other. Dear God, help us. That means we would not be quarreling with our brothers in the church, One body. Several parts. One purpose. Several ways to accomplish that purpose. One spirit. The same Holy Spirit living in each of us. You cannot divide Him. Thus, when you try to divide His body, you break His heart. Our prayer lives, then, ought to reflect compassion and intercession for the church up the street, the organization that does what we try to do, the denomination that doesnt reflect our doctrines exactly.
