Universal Origins Debate! (NOT origins of life !!!) Hey guys, Logical form encouraged, but not necessary. Please, no ad hominem argument-- then again, I would not use National Enquirer either. So lets kick this off! The Big Bang originally maintained that --because the universe is expanding without the entrance of new matter-- that our universe was (logically) once smaller and denser. The prevailing belief until the early 21st century was that we could trace this to an infinitely/indescribably small and dense particle (or whatever) called the singularity. This is the point in physics where all math breaks down, the conclusion being that math and physics originated with our universe. Singularity is scientific for we dont (cant) know. A black hole is a singularity (an assumption, and something we have never seen). The same is true of Dark Matter, and the theory of spacetime. Recently, we discovered the universe is expanding at an accelerated rate, but it supposedly began at faster-than-light speed (also impossible), slowed down, and then proceeded to speed up again. Enter another assumption: anti-gravity. We cant explain why more matter was produced than anti-matter during the big bang. There should have been even amounts which would have self annihilated. This is one of the biggest mysteries of physics. We have also begun to discover planets which have 2 or 3 suns, and according to laws of physics these planets should not have been able to form under such gravitational conditions. I admit that Religious fundamentalism is absurd, but in a sense, a rigid adherence to contemporary cosmological theory is also. In the end, we are left with one major question regarding the origins of our universe, and that is: is the singularity (source) the result of conscious creation, a.k.a. intelligent design? The mere presence of conciousness in our universe suggests a conscious endeavour to begin it. We know that conciousness does not arise from unconsciousness (this would be a phenomena). Furthermore, consider the old argument of the hand grenade: If you take a hand grenade and chuck it into a computer parts shop, you are not likely to end up with a room full of fully functional computers-- and here we have the hand grenade and required parts produced for us. Our current model has no explanation for where the singularity came from, what caused it to bang or why. Intelligent Design is actually MORE comprehensive because it allows for the Big Bang theory while explaining the phenomena and paradoxes as originating with the ultimate Phenomena: the Creator. An atheist must explain away several mysteries in order to come to the conclusion of the singularity (which is not a conclusion). discovermagazine/2002/feb/cover
