Universiti Malaya (UM) is still within the top 10% of the QS World University Rankings 2013/14, despite dropping 11 places due to more intense competition. The country’s premier university beat more than 2,000 other universities globally. UM is the country’s highest-ranked university at 167th place in the global top 200, although it has dropped 11 places compared to 2012. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, the International Islamic University Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Mara have all dropped in this year’s rankings. (see table) Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) improved three places, from 358th place in 2012 to 355th this year. QS Intelligence Unit head of research Ben Sowter said the drop in performance for Malaysian institutions this year reflects the intensity of global education competition. But a five-year comparison suggests they have made some significant progress, he added. “Malaysian institutions have developed a solid profile among the world’s academics and graduate employers,” he said. “This meant that they are performing comparatively well in the academic and employer reputation surveys, indicating that they have developed an international reputation for their academic standards and for the quality of the graduates they produce,” he added. Higher Education Department director-general Prof Datuk Dr Morshidi Sirat said there must be sustained efforts by Malaysian universities to improve their positions. UM vice-chancellor Prof Tan Sri Dr Ghauth Jasmon said UM’s drop in the rankings reflects the increased global competition among universities vying to be ranked among the world’s top universities. “UM’s rank could have improved further if it’s academic survey score had not declined by 3.8% relative to 2012 due to a change in the way QS evaluates Peer Review scores.” Education Ministry secretary-general II Prof Datuk Seri Dr Zaini Ujang, who was UTM vice-chancellor until June this year, said the university emphasised on strengthening research outputs and worked closely with top institutions such as Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Oxford University.
