University of Calabar undergraduate Eke Great Eustace who was popularly known by his fans as HOD GREAT. He is the winner of Nokia, Blackberry and Star Slam rap music contest held last year on campus. Eustace is a rising star in the entertainment industry. Recently, he released a new song for the university. Stanley Uchegbu a final year student of Accounting report. Behold the UNICAL Whiz Kid. Two years ago, the quintet was admitted into the Faculty of Science in Geology department, he never knew fate would be fair to him. During his childhood, he was covetous with music. At the tertiary level, he started proving his mettle in different competition contest. When Nokia and Blackberry storm the institution last year for talent hunt shows which comprises of rap music show, Eustace proved his mettle by beating his opponent and clinched the winner. Before ASUU industrial strike, his team was among those that participated in the National Entrepreneurship Public Speaking Competition. His team knocked out all his competitors to emerge the overall winner. While ASUU was still striking, Eke Great Eustace made history in his quest to break into the entertainment industry and release a new song for his alma mater which he chorused ‘ UNICAL D CHAMPIONS’. He attributed the song to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. James Epoke due to his numerous giant strides in the university, the alumnus and undergraduates who are waxing strong in the academic environment. In the lyrics, HOD Great described VC as an administrative guru and narrated how students struggle on campus to acquire requisite knowledge. According to him in the lyrics, he said; ‘when you come to UNICAL, you can boost of genius, International Resource Persons, Professional Practitioners, academic juggernauts and among others. He went further to say that student residing in Malabor republic ( student hostel) have one way or the other win trophies, gold medals, bronze and even silver prices. We fly out colours in many seasons and always the champions in all endeavours. The song, according to him will be launched in no distance time after all modalities has been put in place. On this development, he solicited with the management authority, Student’s Union Government and the parliamentarians to countenance his proposal needed to keep the ball rolling stressing that inadequate sponsorship and financial constraints has been the major clog in the wheel of progress. Kelvin Kull, who is the manager of Join the Fresh Revolution blogspot, one of the most visiting blogspot in Calabar municipality and across is responsible for promotion and publicizing the team and making sure the music meets required publicity. According to the manager, ’the song is meant to encourage all UNICAL undergraduates both the alumnus. On why he embarked on the releasing the song, Eustace a 200 level student of Geology and also a parliamentarian representing students in hall six (students hall of residence) told CAMPUSLIFE that he was inspired and motivated by deep alumnus conviction and their numerous achievement coupled with what he saw around him which is the way Malabites and Malabresses burn their mid night candles in order to acquire requisite knowledge and skills. He cited the likes of God’s will Akpabuyo, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Reuben Abati, Chief Press Secretary to President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity. Frank Edogho, presenter who wants to be a millionaire, Stephine Okereke, Uche Jumbo and Kate Henshaw, Nollywood screen divers’ actresses and to mention but a few all went through UNICAL. The song according to him is congruent for prospective students that once you step your foot into the institution, just be rest assured that you are a champion irrespective of the academic distraction coming from ASUU and their pay master. He implore the students to always develop their potentials in any environment they found themselves adding the essence of vocational and entrepreneurship skills acquisition while in school. This he said will help every graduate to carve niche for himself after graduation. He further stressed that such skilled person will not rot away due to unemployment in the country. We don’t have to depend solely on school certificate all the time; we need to think about what we can do on ourselves. Eustace said. He pleaded with all the faculties and departments to participate in the promotion of the champion’s team by passing across the message. Speaking to Campuslife, the president of Faculty of Law, Mr. Ojong Woda who is also a member of Champion Promotion Team described Eustace as a great rising star in the entertainment industry noting that each time he listened to the lyrics of the song, he got motivated to study harder in order to carve a niche as others did. Eustace is the whiz kid of our time, said Frank Utobo, a female student in the Faculty of Science who identified herself as Stella Ofordili. Other members of the group include; Bassey Eka, SUG president, Epoke Lincoln, President Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Akah Augustine, Director of Information SUG, Blaise Akpan, emeritus Financial Secretary SUG and among others.
