University of Ibadan VC Hails Nucs Clampdown On Fake Campuses The University of Ibadan Vice Chancellor, Isaac Folorunso Adewole, has given kudos to the National Universities Commission (NUC) for its recent clampdown on fake Continuing Education Centres (CEC) offering part-time and weekend courses to unsuspecting students in the name of Open Distance Learning (ODL). Describing the step as a welcome development, Professor Adewole charged the regulatory body not to shirk its responsibility to see that Nigerians who are thirsty for and are in search of quality education are not denied access and are not taken advantage of by fake agents masquerading as Distant Learning Centres. Adewole spoke on Saturday at the opening session of the First Distinguished Lecture and Stakeholders Forum organised by the Distance Learning Centre of the university at its International Conference Centre. In realisation of the need to meet the yearnings of Nigerians for university education, Adewole said that the UI would ensure it meets the demands of the critical imperatives of ODL, adding, one of such is to provide access to learning without boundaries. I have the full assurance that our DLC has not been found wanting in this. With the use of appropriate ICT, the UI DLC has extended its operations beyond the frontiers of this country. Efforts are currently being made to provide our course materials in multiple formats - e-copies, audio, video, printed form and CD - to meet students preference, the VC said. Director of Open Distance Education, NUC, Abuja, Suleiman Ramon-Yusuf, in the lecture titled Re-positioning Distance Learning Centres in the Nigerian University System for Efficiency and Equitable Access to Quality Education, canvassed for faithful implementation of the institutional ODL policy. He maintained that if this is done in an environment of prudent and propitious deployment of resources and transparent and innovative institutional governance, will be the deal-clincher and the game-changer for DLCs that will leverage on the economies of scale and achieve sterling performance in the quest to enhance access to quality university education without compromising quality.
