University researchers from the US and Great Britain, including Harvard and Princeton, have released a controversial study claiming that poverty reduces brain power. They claim that just having to survive day to day, worrying about things like how to pay the light bill, uses up so much brainpower that there’s much less left over for other areas of life. Their experiments found that when test subjects were overly worried about money problems, they showed a drop in cognitive functions equal to losing 13 I.Q. points. They say this is why poor people are more prone to making mistakes and bad decisions. Well, it’s food for thought. But I’d point out that the economic meltdown and the continuing slow economy were brought to us by wealthy bankers and politicians who went to places like Harvard and Princeton. Personally, I wonder if some rich people have 13 I.Q. points to lose.
