University students in Kenya who took to the streets Tuesday in anger over a rumoured increase in public education fees have become the subject of online ire after their strike turned violent. Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has denied authorising an increase in university costs, but that did not stop students from striking across the country. Police in central Nairobi fired tear gas at stone-throwing protesters who were blocked from marching into the Ministry of Education. More than 100 students were arrested in protests across the country, including in Machakos, Mombasa and outside Kisimu. Many on Twitter shared images of the demonstrations using #UniversityDemo.
