University students warned to stay off campuses The Academic Staff Union of Universities has warned university students to disregard the directive by the federal government and stay away from campuses, Nigerian Eye reports. The union advised parents to keep their children and wards at home as no academic activity would resume until the five-month-old strike was called off.In a press briefing today December 2, 2013, the President of ASUU, Nasir Fagge, declared the union “shall never be cowed.” “We shall bow only to what we as academics are convinced will serve the interest of Nigeria and its people, no matter their ethnic, religious or class origins. This is where we stand. We shall never be cowed,” the leader of ASUU said. The federal government last week gave the striking lecturers till December 4 to resume duties or risk being relieved of their duties. It directed the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar to deploy officers to various institutions to maintain law and order on campuses. The Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike also directed school authorities to replace any lecturer or member of staff that fails to comply with the directive. ~ H.S
