University’s Link Gallery hosts exhibition of recycled material Artist Bob Barron showcases his works using card and slate at the University of Winchester’s Link Gallery (20 January to 8 March). Bob transforms old, worn roof slates and discarded packaging card into collages, to express musings about the passage of time which he reflects physically through images and textures. Colour is kept to a minimum to emphasise the surface of the work and provide a contrast to the high gloss of modern advertising imagery. “I like the idea of recycling material – which has been torn, walked upon or thrown out as refuse – and turning it into art,” said Bob. “I particularly enjoy working with slate because of the age and nature of the material. I am interested in its journey from the seabed to the quarry, from the quarry to the rooftop, and from the rooftop to the artwork. I wash away any remaining grime from the slate I’ve collected and scratch into it, sometimes leaving human traces of some description, such as a handprint or footprint.” Bob also collects waste card from local outlets. He cuts, tears, paints and reassembles various pieces to produce the work, often scratching the surface or sanding it down to reveal the corrugations beneath. His interest in astronomy means suns, moons and constellations are often depicted, or simpler geometric shapes such as circles or squares. Bob Barron was born in Durham, and following studies at Sunderland College of Art he spent the majority of his working life as a full-time artist in the north east. He has recently relocated and now works from his studio in Southampton. Bob has had solo exhibitions throughout the country and at various galleries in London, and installations have featured in Ely Cathedral and Durham Cathedral. Works on card and slate takes place between 20 January to 8 March at the Link Gallery, West Downs Centre, University of Winchester, Romsey Road, Winchester, Hampshire SO22 5HT.
