Unless youre a queen, life is pretty tough for a wasp. Toward the end of summer/beginning of fall, the queen bees hibernate, leaving the worker wasps alone in a dying nest with no sustenance. At this point the worker wasps must scavenge for food, and they ultimately starve or freeze to death. Several of these wasps have entered my home, displaying an admirable resourcefulness and a will to live against all odds. One in particular has been here since mid-October. Ive been feeding him honey and sugar water. Unfortunately, even in this house, wasp life has its perils. Twice Ive found him loitering in my sink (likely in search for food) as I prepared to wash the dishes: he narrowly escaped drowning. Today he was discovered casually crawling along the living room floor, where I could have accidentally trampled him. Soon after he marched stubbornly through a mass of cobweb remnants. Through it all, he survived, and he continues to evade death as Iowa Citys lone winter wasp.
