Unless youve been without news for several weeks, youve heard all about the missing Malaysian jetliner and its 239 presumed dead. What youll continue to hear very much less about are the 14 confirmed dead and 176 missing in Washington states recent massive landslide. The difference? The possibly 190 or more people lost in the American Northwest landslide were mostly rural, working class whites (in other words, virtually all of the dead or missing were decidedly unlikely to have been Democrats). Rather obviously, a killer mudslide in a solidly Democratic area such as, say, Beverly Hills, or any suburban zone of the Puget lowlands, certainly would have knocked the missing 777 out of American headlines. Republican lives definitely mean less to major media. No matter how many bodies of rural folks are pulled from the rubble and mud in Washington state, the 777 flight will remain above the fold of every mainstream daily and will lead every broadcast.
