Unlike any other event in Australia, 351 Camp, a program of the not for profit organisation Musicians Making A Difference (MMAD), is changing young lives through the power of music, positive role modelling and motivation. With a hip-hop inspired name standing for “3 Days, 5 Elements, 1 Shot”, the camp was entirely conceived by Sydney artist, activist and founder of MMAD Dominic Brook. Dominic’s vision for the camp is to continually foster the ambitions of young people. “We started the camp because we knew the powerful things that can happen when similar-minded artists get together for three days, pushing their skills and creativity to the limit. We want to see young, aspiring, Australian artists succeed both musically and in life,” Dominic says. Every young person to participate in a 351 Camp arrives with their own story, own dreams and their own unique skills. By the end of the camp, they are all united by an experience shared at 351. Youth Worker for MMAD, Emma O’Connell, shares that “the impact of a 351 Camp can be life changing. A few days of inspiration, learning from some of Australia’s most respected artists, developing the confidence to put plans to new dreams and having the freedom, and encouragement, to put raw emotion to paper can be a significant turning point for a young person.” 351 features tutors from a diverse range of backgrounds, committed to providing guidance to the young attendees. Channel [V] TV host and Triple J DJ Maya Jupiter, a previous guest, says: “351 Camp is a great opportunity to develop your skills, learn about the music industry and be around other inspiring people. I can’t recommend it highly enough. All the tutors are amazing, beautiful people. Get to the 351 Camp. You’ll love it.” Dominic and his team have been taking select groups of keen, young artists into a three-day, camp-like atmosphere since 2003. The 351 Camp not only offers professional recording and performance time to participants, it features daily seminars and workshops in the following areas: songwriting, production, stage performance, vocals, street dance, legal aerosol art, multi-media and motivation. There are also nightly concerts which have featured well-known acts such as Bliss n Eso & The Potbelleez to finish off each of the three massive days and reward participants for their hard work. Past attendees, such as Sydney’s Ryan Buckland, 21, are using their time at 351 to carve out future career paths. “There isn’t anything else like 351,” Buckland says. “It helped me know exactly what I wanted to do with my life and made me want to help people, especially the youth. I’m going to do great things with my life and 351 gave me that motivation. 351 isn’t just a camp – it’s a part of me, who I am.” Due to the unprecedented success of the Sydney camps, 351 is now a nationwide event.
