Unlike most diseases, scientists have found that white-nose syndrome targets bats when their populations are the lowest and least active — in winter. The disease transmission is tied to hibernation and body temperature, so when bats start hibernating, its almost like they become petri dishes for this fungus to grow on. The good news - bats are not transmitting the infection during the migratory period. This is important in limiting the rate at which the disease is spreading geographically! The study, funded by Bat Conservation International, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Geographic Society, provides valuable information for planning strategies to manage white-nose syndrome.
