Unmasking urban Ugandan society An intense discussion is going on at this Facebook page of the Kampala Express over the question of comments and feedback to the page that are poorly and carelessly written. It is causing a crisis and raising much self-doubt among many readers. Many Ugandans had thought owning an iPhone 6 or soon an iPhone 7 is a sign of sophistication. Most think owning a car is a sign of progress and sophistication. Of course to most, being on Twitter or Facebook is also an indication of being hip and modern. The Kampala Express has swept away all that and exposed the mediocre underbelly of our society. That is why many are taking personal and deeply resenting our insistence on proper, basic writing. This insistence on proper diction is threatening the established order and many of our assumptions about ourselves. Egos and image are at risk. True merit, true sophistication, true middle class is of the mind. That is the reason the world still remembers William Shakespeare, Isaac Newton or Aristotle, long after it has forgotten the rich men of their time. The Kampala Express has exposed a middle class Uganda that dresses New York, owns New York, attempts to live New York, but when it comes down to the true test, the small details like attention to detail in the way one writes on a public forum, many if not most have been found wanting. We shall vigorously pursue and highlight this true idea of middle class, the one of diligent, thinking, thoughtful people, not just those with the flashiest cars or houses as the Ugandan media has tended to promote over the last fifteen years. The only way to improve ones writing ability in languages like English, at least, is by reading books. The Kampala Express has shown that hundreds of thousands of Ugandans are on Facebook, but do not real actual books. Therefore Facebook members, start to read books. Real books, full-length books. Buy them, rather than bspend all your money on weekend clubbing. Reading real books will solve the problem that many Facebook users are facing in expressing themselves in very simple sentences. Perhaps toward the Christmas and New Year holidays, the Kampala Express will give out books as gifts to some of its readers. Use and like Facebook and other social media. But do not forget the last four letters of the word Face-book. They are b-o-o-k. ENDS
