Unnecessary Roughness | Ezekiel 7:4 Have you ever heard the term Unnecessary Roughness? Any real sports fanatic can tell you quite a bit about this call. This is a term that is commonly used to bring attention to the miss-treatment of another while on the playing field or court. This behavior can be accompanied by stiff penalties if seen by the referee. Unfortunately, this call can be used in the church as well. We see it all the time from the pulpit to the pews. We see it in the choir. We see it with the ushers. We see it in the mission. We see it in the youth department. I could go on, but the point is wherever you have people; you have the propensity for “unnecessary roughness” to take place. When a person is being unnecessarily rough with others, sometimes it is the result of an internal issue taking place on the inside of the perpetrator. However, none of us has the right to mistreat others. I myself have been guilty of this and believe me when I say...the penalty is stiff, because the eyes of the “referee” are in every place beholding the evil and the good! In the football arena, the guilty party can cause the team to lose yardage thus giving the opposing team a definite advantage. Well, it works the same way in the church! When we are guilty of unnecessary roughness toward others, we set the church back and depending on our position on the field of salvation, this could give Satan a perfect opportunity to score a touchdown! So what types of acts constitute an “unnecessary roughness” call? Let’s discuss a few. Are you aware of the fact that when you have an ugly attitude with people, that constitutes unnecessary roughness? Mean-mugging people...unnecessary roughness! Plotting and scheming against one another...unnecessary roughness! Unforgiveness…unnecessary roughness! Lying on people…unnecessary roughness! Slandering other peoples name...unnecessary roughness! Defaming someones reputation & character…unnecessary roughness! Yep, I know...its getting deep isnt it? The Bible reminds us in Ezekiel 7:4 that the Lord will not look on you with pity; He will not spare you. He will surely repay you for your conduct and for the detestable practices you have committed. He further assures, Then you will know that I am the Lord. My God, my God! The next time you are even thinking about committing an act that goes against the divine play book, I encourage you to remember the words of the Lord because He is the ultimate referee and He has the power to press the re-play tape for you to see your own deeds - not anybody elses deeds, but YOURS. Once the deed has been done, the unnecessary roughness call will be made against you and after further review...the fourth and final step is the issuing of the penalty. Can you handle it?
