Unsolicited Public Service Announcement :) My childs large special needs stroller and leg brace --- or any persons wheelchair or other medical devices --- do NOT have magical powers! They do NOT work like invisibility cloaks. The person using them does NOT disappear when in them. He or she is just that --- a living, breathing, FEELING, communicating PERSON! You can speak to him/her directly as he/she hears you (in whatever way possible for that person). For real! My lifelong pet peeve --- people speaking ABOUT me as if I am not there in the room with them --- instead of including me and speaking TO me as every respectful person knows to do. My BIGGER pet peeve now --- people doing this to my child!!!!! --- especially when it is obvious that they are doing it b/c he is using his medical equipment and that makes them uncomfortable. The most recent event (of many!) to bring on this unsolicited public service announcement -----> Random woman at doctors office today --- while looking at Andrew sitting in his large special needs stroller with a very strange look on her sourpuss face: Well, he looks....CALM! My unspoken thoughts... As opposed to what?! Me: Yes, we spent the morning at zoo camp out in the heat and have been waiting here a long time. We are pretty tired. Random Woman (while still looking at Andrew strangely): What is his name? Me: Andrew, the lady would like to know your name. Would YOU like to tell her? Meaning --- He SPEAKS and HEARS YOU you nitwit, why dont you ask him yourself?! Sadly, I think the unspoken was completely lost on her! As is the case in most conversations, the non-verbals in her conversation were much more offensive than even her words. Can anyone else relate to this? (and sorry if you can!) PSA over and out! Just remember the invisibility cloak part, ok? Thanks for listening! ;)
