Until 1965 Littleton and surrounds residents, just like the majority of towns and communities in our state, in need of emergency medical care and transportation to a medical facility were mostly own their own except in the case where a local funeral home could provide horizontal transportation, but little or no care, by means of a hearse or station wagon fitted with a stretcher. Such was the case in Warren and Halifax county. In 1965 a group of eighteen men volunteers formed the Warren County Rescue Squad. They met at the EnterpriseEpworth Community Clubhouse. They took Red Cross First Aid training from two certified instructors, Spec Wright and Pro Lewis of Roanoke Rapids. The Littleton Fire Dept was the training site. They proudly finished the training on December 9, 1965. In 1967 they purchased an acre of land from Mrs BF(Miss Eugie)Stansburys upon which they erected their headquarters building. Stith Walker, Clyde Myrick, James Limer, Oliver Davis, Dr CH Woodburn, Robert Salmon and Roy Pierce were the first members of the Board of Directors. The first squad officers were Bill Reid(Commander), Alfred Cooke(Leuitenant)and MJ Spragins(Secretary/Treasurer). In this September 14, 1975 Littleton Observer photo by squad member Lynn Pierce, her husband Gene Pierce is presenting the. Squadman of the Year Award to Palmer Newsome, who was a charter member of the rescue squad. I was honored to become a member of the rescue squad after I returned from Vietnam. Brother John was also a member of the organization. Enjoy and share! Stephen/OG
