Until he was 89 years old, Ed Bray had a secret. Thats the first line of the picture book bio Im writing on this man who is 91. My mom sent me an article about him in the Tulsa World. I called him and asked if I could write his bio. We are friends now. The first word he learned on a flash card was WHIRL. Thats the title of the book. While Ed is proud of this accomplishment and inspires children, prisoners, newscasters, Hollywood...he is also a WWII veteran, one who cannot swim but had to pull bodies from the sea in Normandy. For three days, until he finally told his commander, I cant do this anymore. In his cozy house in Oklahoma, he has a kabillion medals on his wall. The boots he wore then are as shiny as they were 70 years ago. I called him today to thank him for his service. Thank you, Ed Bray, for your service, your courage...and now, for inspiring children to read. You never gave up, just as Winston Churchill commanded back then. Ed Bray can now read street and highway signs, prescription bottles, menus, grocery aisle signs, young reader books, fan letters from children and prisoners, the script of the CBS Morning News interview about him. I love this man. I love his courage and fortitude. I love how he inspires. And I am honored that he agreed to let me write his bio for kids. Were already dreaming about doing school visits together. Thank you, Mama, for leading me to Ed. And for the title, An Egg Is Quiet.
