Until recently, El Salvador was known as the worlds capital for femicide—defined as the killing of a girl or woman by a man because of her gender. To curb the high rates of femicide, El Salvador passed a law in 2012 that defines and punishes femicide as a specific crime – which partially contributed to the decrease in femicide from 923 cases in 2010 to 175 cases in 2013. The government also uses another strategy, which helps women in abusive relationships identify and measure the level of danger they face and report abuse before it escalates to murder.
