Until the 1960s, there were always hotels downtown. The Occidental Hotel, at the northwest corner of 4th and B Streets, is by far the hotel with the longest continuous history. Finding written history on the hotels is difficult, but visual ones are easier to come by from advertisements and tourist postcards. Here is the Occidental Hotel from 1877. The hotel was destroyed in the earthquake and rebuilt with reinforced concrete with an exotic motif.
