Untitled #26 (inspired by the audio drama--the part I just did) She put out a hand to stop him. “Where do you think you’re going, Boy?” The 8-year-old’s nostrils flared at the last word. “I’m not a boy,” he retorted furiously. “Well,” came a dry voice from behind him, “if you’re not, then what are you.” Alonso whirled, coming face to face with a glowering Headmaster. “I’d control that temper if I were you,” he advised, “or I’m sure we could arrange a nice cell down in the dungeons.” The boy glared, then looked down at his feet. “I just wanted to save my brother from those monsters,” he mumbled belligerently. “Because the rest of us won’t,” the Headmaster asked sharply, “is that what you were going to say?” “Calm down, Cheveyo,” she said, inserting herself between the two. “This kid’s getting on my nerves,” he grumbled. “He still hasn’t recovered from everything that’s happened,” she reminded him, “and his twin’s still in harm’s way. He can’t exactly be expected to handle the strain well when he never has before.” Alonso glanced up, his expression murderous. “And you calling me ‘boy’ only makes it worse.” “Seems to me you’ve a lot of maturing to do before you can be referred to as a young man,” Cheveyo remarked dryly. “Plus,” his sister added, “you are only eight years old.” “Actually,” he corrected defiantly, “I’m thirteen. I age differently than you, remember?” “You surely don’t act 13, or even 8 for that matter,” the Headmaster snapped. “Cheveyo,” she exclaimed. “Sahriah, this kid’s been under my skin for way too long. He—“ “Be that as it may,” she cut in, emphasizing each word, “this is not the time.”
